Things to do before you sell your old smartphone

Looking to upgrade your old smartphone by exchanging it with your service provider, trading it in at a local retailer, or handing it down to a friend or family member? You probably don’t want to hand over your data, pics, music or apps with it.  Here are three steps you’ll want to take before giving your phone to someone else. 1.  Back Up Your Data  – You may already have your phone setup to automatically sync to an online service like iCloud or your Google account. We have learned you can never be too careful with data and think it’s a good idea to make a manual backup of the data on your phone as well. You can create a backup using the tools provided by your phone’s manufacturer, such as  Apple’s iTunes ,  Samsung’s Kies , or the  Windows Phone Desktop App . 2.  Perform a Factory Reset  – The reset will wipe the phone, deleting your personal data and any apps you’ve installed. It will also reset the phone back to its default state. Each operating system handles this

Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Its way ahead of competition !

The Redmi 1S, Xiaomi's latest handset offering, has all the ingredients to churn out a blockbuster. Priced at just Rs 5,999 , it throws a big challenge to most phones in the sub-Rs 10,000 range in India with its unmatched specifications.  Design and build Hard to expect an original design from the Chinese, isn't it? The Redmi's design borrows heavily from the Nokia Lumia series, and, if not for the back panel, it would look identical to the Lumia 520. It has a tough and sturdy frame with an equally smart-looking exterior in black and grey. The plastic used on the back panel screams Chinese, but outdoes the competition in this segment. The company may announce colourful back panels soon. The back cover is removable, as is the battery, unlike in the Mi3, and the RedMi supports dual SIMs. Display and touch Every phone has that one astonishing feature, and for the Redmi the high-definition (HD) display at the given price is what blows our mind. The spectacular

Microsoft Launches Lumia 530 smartphone

MICROSOFT DEVICES  on Wednesday unveiled the Nokia Lumia 530 smartphone @ INR 7350/- , a Windows Phone 8.1 device that it promotes as the most affordable Lumia handset to date. The Nokia Lumia 530 follows in the footsteps of the Nokia Lumia 520 smartphone, which the Finnish phone company claimed last year was its most popular Windows Phone handset. There’s a 4in 854×480 LCD touchscreen onboard smartphone, which while no improvement on the Lumia 520′s identical screen, comes powered by a faster  quad-core 1.2GHz  Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 mobile operating system. The Nokia Lumia 530′s 5MP camera doesn’t quite match the Lumia 930′s 20MP sensor, but it might outperform its high-end end rival in terms of  battery life , with its 1,430mAh battery offering 10 hours of talk time and 22 days on standby. The Nokia Lumia 530 boasts just 4GB of internal storage, but this can be expanded by an additional 128GB via microSD card. --- Login to w

How to track your lost Android Phone

Losing your phone is  never  fun and in the event your precious Android device lands itself in someone else’s hands, 1 of 2 things can happen. That person will either have a new phone to add to their collection, or they’ll be kind enough to return it. But even attempting to return a device to its original owner could prove difficult if the phone is locked up with some sort of password. Today, Google is taking a lot of the stress out of this entire situation by adding a few handy new feature to  Android Device Manager . The web interface (and app) now has a few new options in the “lock” section. Like before, the device can be force locked with a password  (something you’ll want to do to keep your all your private data/media safe) but now you’ll now see the option to add a recovery message to the lockscreen, along with a phone number the person can call to return the device. For the message, it can be anything you like. You can add death threats, or take the more cordial route

Major security flaw puts 90% of all smartphones at risk

A four year-old vulnerability in an open source component that is a critical part of Google’s Android  mobile  operating system could leave mobile devices that use it susceptible to attack, according to researchers at the firm Bluebox Security. The vulnerability was disclosed on Tuesday. It affects devices running Android versions 2.1 to 4.4 (“KitKat”), according to a statement released by Bluebox. According to Bluebox, the vulnerability was introduced to Android by way of the open source Apache Harmony module. It affects Android’s verification of digital signatures that are used to vouch for the identity of mobile applications, according to Jeff Forristal, Bluebox’s CTO. Why your phone and laptop batteries degrade ?

We've all experienced the woes of a degraded rechargeable battery, whether it’s a phone that can't last a day without a charge or a laptop that’s become so reliant on its charger you can barely call it a portable device anymore. It's a problem that scientists have struggled to solve because they couldn’t figure out what was causing such sudden and rapid battery deterioration. But now researchers at the US Department of Energy have identified why rechargeable batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time. Working with lithium-ion batteries, which are the most commonly used type of battery in consumer devices, the researchers were able to map their charge and discharge process down to a few billionths of a metre to find exactly how degradation occurs. Their research appears in a pair of studies published by  Nature Communications, and according to Matt Safford at  Smithsonian Magazine,  two main culprits in battery degradation were identified: "The fi

Windows Phone 8.1 update

Microsoft is all set to release an update for Windows Phone 8.1.  Details about the Update 1 aka GDR (General Distribution Release) have been spotted on  Microsoft’s Developer Center . The update includes many improvements for OEM’s and a few new ones for consumers. In case of the consumers the update will bring folder support on the Start menu that will enable users to club apps together in a single folder similar to iOS and Android. Moreover, interactive phone cover support will also be present in this update. Interactive phone covers let manufactures develop cases for Windows Phones that when opened, unlock the display, enabling easier access to the phone. Android OEM’s like HTC and LG have already made such cases  HTC Dot View case  and  LG G3′s QuickCircle   case for their flagship phones. They will get to run special apps when the cover is closed, and specify what happens when it’s open. Additionally, the update would bring support for 7″ devices as well as ones with
